How do you build business credit from scratch?

Build business credit in five steps: (1) form an LLC or corporation and get an EIN, (2) register a D-U-N-S number with Dun & Bradstreet, (3) open a business bank account and dedicated business phone, (4) add three tradelines that report (a NET-30 vendor, a fuel or fleet card, and a business credit card), and (5) pay every one of them on time for 90 days. That's the minimum viable business credit file — enough to start showing a Paydex score. Full lender-grade credit takes 12–24 months.
Quick facts
- Time to first Paydex score
- 60–90 days after 3 reporting tradelines
- Time to lender-grade file
- 12–24 months
- D-U-N-S number
- Free from Dun & Bradstreet
- EIN
- Free from IRS.gov (5 minutes)
- Minimum tradelines to start
- 3 that actually report
- Paydex 'good' band
- 80+ (pays on time)
- Experian Business 'good' band
- 76–100
- SBSS 'strong' band
- 155+
The 60-second answer
Business credit is not built the same way as personal credit. There's no automatic file the moment you form an LLC — you have to construct it, one reporting tradeline at a time. The good news: the whole process is mechanical. Do the five steps below in order and you'll have a scoring file in about 90 days.
The reason to bother is money. A business with a mature, thick credit file (12+ months, 5+ tradelines, Paydex 80+) qualifies for products that don't require a personal guarantee, larger unsecured limits, and rates 3–10 points lower than a personal-credit-only file.
Pros and cons
- ✓Business credit separates the business from the owner — critical when applying for larger unsecured products
- ✓Paydex 80+ scores are hit by paying tradelines a few days EARLY (not just on time)
- ✓A mature business credit file can unlock $50k–$250k of unsecured credit without a personal guarantee
- ✓Business credit doesn't inherit personal FICO drops — a rough personal quarter doesn't wreck business access
- ✓Reporting tradelines can be added deliberately (NET-30 vendors, fuel cards, business cards) — you have direct control
- ×It's slow. Even a fast build is 90 days to first score, 12+ months to lender-grade
- ×Most vendors DO NOT report — you have to specifically ask before opening an account
- ×Dun & Bradstreet will aggressively upsell paid 'CreditBuilder' services — the free D-U-N-S is all you need for scoring
- ×Personal guarantee is still standard on most business loans under $250k, even with strong business credit
- ×One missed payment on a small reporting tradeline can drop Paydex 20+ points — the scoring is harsh
The 5 steps in order
| Option | When to use | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Entity + EIN | Form LLC or S-Corp; get EIN from IRS | Sole prop technically works but limits future access |
| 2. D-U-N-S number | Register free at dnb.com — required for D&B scoring | D&B will upsell paid services; free is enough |
| 3. Business bank + phone | Dedicated business checking; 411-listed business phone | Never mix personal and business banking again |
| 4. Three reporting tradelines | NET-30 vendor + fuel card + business credit card | Ask each vendor if they report before opening |
| 5. 90 days of on-time payments | Pay before the due date, not on it | D&B rewards early payment more than personal credit does |
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to build business credit?
Realistically 90 days to a first D&B Paydex score, 6 months to a usable Experian Business file, and 12–24 months to a lender-grade credit profile that unlocks unsecured products above $100k. There's no shortcut — the age of the tradelines is a scored factor.
What are the best NET-30 vendors to start with?
Uline (packaging), Grainger (industrial supply), Quill (office supply), and Summa Office Supplies all report to D&B and Experian Business. Open accounts, place small orders monthly, and pay 5–10 days early. Three reporting NET-30s + one business credit card = a functional starter file.
Do business credit cards build business credit?
Some do, some don't. Capital One Spark, US Bank Business, and Ramp report to business bureaus. Chase Ink and Amex Business typically report only to personal bureaus. Always confirm reporting before opening. The card only builds business credit if the issuer reports to Experian Business, D&B, or Equifax Business.
Do I need a D-U-N-S number to build business credit?
Yes — the D-U-N-S is Dun & Bradstreet's business identifier and is required for D&B's Paydex scoring. It's free at dnb.com. Ignore any pitch to pay for expedited D-U-N-S or bundled 'credit building' services — the free version works identically.
Does business credit help my personal FICO?
Not directly — the two files are separate. But building business credit can indirectly help personal FICO by giving you access to business credit cards that don't report to your personal file, which lowers your personal utilization ratio. That effect alone can move personal FICO 10–30 points.
